TracTrix in Woodworking
Wood moldings are made by high speed rotating cutters that define the contour of the molding. These cutters are themselves cut on Numerically Controlled grinders. Woodworkers and lumber mills sometimes need to modify an existing molding design to create a new design. Or they need to copy an old design for which there is no CAD file. To do this they have to create a CAD file for use on the NC grinder to make the new cutter.

The problem is how to create a CAD file when only a sample of the molding is available. To get around this problem the sample molding is sliced to approximately 1/32 inch and scanned on a flat bed scanner to a raster file. The raster file is automatically converted by TracTrix to vectors. These are imported to the CAD file for scaling, editing and final export to the cutter grinder NC program.
