TracTrix in the railroad industry
US railroads have a long and interesting history. Drawings of the rights of way and track layouts are no less interesting and historical. Many are considered works of art. Most were drawn before CAD or even before mechanical drafting machines. The information they contain is very much current and useful but exists only on paper but railroad track engineering has come a long way since the early tracks were laid.

Modern track design and, maintenance is a science that requires the precision of CAD and all of its mathematical functionality. The problem is one of how to get the right of way and track layout information from old drawings into a vector format to manipulate and update in CAD.

The old drawings were carefully scanned and the raster file was automatically converted to vectors in TracTrix and exported for editing to CAD.
