in the Extrusion Die Industry |

|
The user often has sample aluminum extrusions from a broken
die where the CAD file for the die is no longer available.
The problem is how to create a new extrusion die without
drawings or dimensional information for the die. To reproduce an extrusion die by Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (Wire EDM) requires a CAD file as source. |
To achieve this the extrusion is sliced
and sanded to a thickness of approximately 1/32 inch. The
'slice' is placed flat on a desktop scanner and scanned into
a raster file at 400 Dots per Inch (dpi). It is then
exported to TracTrix for automatic conversion to vectors. By
tracking on the outline of the 'slice'. The vectors are taken into the user's CAD software and scaled to the desired size. The edited CAD file is then taken into the Wire EDM software and the die is cut. |
