Budget cuts in the Department of Defense precipitated
some very creative thinking when new needs had to be met
within tight monetary constraints. A major boatyard had the opportunity to retrofit some small U.S. Navy vessels but had only paper prints of the existing vessels. The new work was to be designed in CAD. The problem was how to get the present form and dimensional information of the vessels into CAD so that they could make a rapid and intelligent proposal and expeditiously do the work if their bid was successful. |
The paper drawings were scanned to rasters
and automatically vectorized in TracTrix. The present
dimensional information was edited in the boatyard's CAD
software and brought to mathematical precision in order to
be the basis for the new
design. They got the job. |
